New project funded by Trafikverket

The project "Urban station communities - densification for good accessibility" aims to develop an analysis method for evaluating accessibility and density in relation to the sustainable development goals in Agenda 2030, in particular goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Stations increase the accessibility at regional and national level and create potential for urban development. However, the station communities are affected by barrier effects and noise with potential negative consequences for social and economic sustainability. An increased understanding of the positive and negative consequences as well as an evaluation of solutions based on the sustainable development goals in Agenda 2030 would lead to better planning and development of future station communities.

The project is based on previous research with a focus on studies of how the built environment affects social, ecological, and economic processes. The results of the analysis will generate insights into possible conflicts and synergies between social, economic and ecological effects, but also between the Swedish Transport Administration's and the municipalities' assignments and goals. Thus, the analysis result becomes an important decision basis in the municipalities' and the Swedish Transport Administration's joint planning and development of future station areas and communities in Sweden.
